Meet NU alum Jill Carr, Co-Founder Labour the App

Tell us about your company:
We know that having a baby is a two person job (at least!) but so often the mental, emotional, and physical work falls on the person giving birth. Labour the App was built to give both partners equal access to information to share the effort and excitement of having a baby.

In its simplest form, Labour is a single app through trying to conceive, pregnancy, and the first 12 weeks postpartum. The biggest benefits of Labour the App:
Tailored information – Cycle tracking to plan and optimize for conception with insights into fertile windows, weekly pregnancy and postpartum developments and how to support each other (so you both know when the baby is the size of an avocado).
Medically reviewed – Medically reviewed educational content for both partners including, improving sperm health, preconception visits with your healthcare provider, miscarriage understanding, how to bond with your baby, and sharing the real deal on postpartum.
Thoughtful curation – Shared checklists and product recommendations so you don’t have to spend hours researching the best stroller for your lifestyle.
Secure & private – We made Labour the App a subscription-based app so there’s no sale of personal information and data and the experience is ad-free. (We don’t need anyone else having a say in our bodies or family planning.)
What inspired you to start your business?
When my husband and I decided to become parents, I realized that, in a partnership where we are equal partners, the division of labor for conception and pregnancy was anything but. I realized there wasn’t an easy way for partners to be involved in the process, so my co-founder Ashley and I set out to build something that shares the effort and excitement of becoming parents.
What are your proudest achievements so far?
Building Labour the App with a dear friend has been the thing I’m most proud of – managing through the birth of each of our kids, life, and working full-time, we’ve managed to create something that helps families expand. Being a part of anyone’s family planning experience feels like a true honor. But perhaps the most exciting milestone is Ashley and her husband have successfully used Labour the App to become pregnant and had their first child in January 2025!
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs:
Just start! You’ll figure out the things you need to figure out – and rely on your networks for help, advice, and encouragement!
Please share a memory or thought about your alma mater:
I loved my time at Northwestern but the best, most enduring thing has been the relationships I built. The friendships have endured through many a life and job changes, and I’m so grateful for all the time we had in class (and at Timothy O’Toole’s around the corner after class!).
