Meet USC alum Zac Coughlin, Founder of Zac’s Sweet Shop

Tell us about your company:
Zac’s Sweet Shop is a chocolate company making gourmet, innovative, and delicious bite-sized chocolate confections including truffles, cookies, pretzels, and chocolate bark. Zac is on the mission to reinvent the box of chocolates experience through purpose, passion, and innovative products.
What inspired you to start your business?
Ever since I was little I was OBSESSED with dessert—ice cream, brownies, cake, and chocolate…if I wasn’t eating dessert I was making it for the people around me. I quickly realized the magic chocolate holds and a space on the market for a more affordable, delicious, and most importantly fun treat.
What are your proudest achievements so far?
One of my favorite milestones was being featured on Beyoncé’s website as one of her favorite Black-owned brands across the country.
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs:
Follow your passions, address what you need vs what you want for your business, and put yourself in the customer’s shoes.
Please share a memory or thought about your alma mater:
One of my favorite memories was launching Zac’s during my junior year at USC. I was recipe-developing in my dorm room, heading to my commercial kitchen after class, and was able to bring my chocolates to classmates and friends as I launched. It was amazing to have everyone’s (classmates, professors, and so forth!) support.
