Tell us about your company:
Màkor Coffee is an organic coffee brand built around a simple idea: make your daily coffee do more. Our signature Moments Blend combines high-quality organic Arabica coffee with organic cacao and a small blend of whole-food ingredients like turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, chaga, and cayenne. It’s designed for people who love coffee but also care about what they put in their body — no extracts, no weird fillers, just organic coffee with functional ingredients.
What inspired you to start your business?
I had been putting Turmeric in my coffee for a decade, because of the amazing benefits of the spice. I was thinking about how everyone forgets to take their vitamins, but no one forgets to drink their coffee. How can I help make coffee just a bit better for people, so they get amazing ingredients in their coffee daily, something they wouldn’t otherwise eat/drink.
What are your proudest achievements so far?
It’s been a fun ride. Getting our first sale online and getting into our first retailer were fun. What is interesting though, is I am getting as much enjoyment from the emails that I receive – people telling me how it’s their favorite coffee, or it’s helped with a gut issue. It’s been great.
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs:
For me, I think really understanding your numbers. How long are customers staying? What’s their average value of what they are buying from you. You can have a lot of fun, but if the numbers don’t work, it becomes a grind and you start to wish you didn’t even start the business.
Please share a memory or thought about your alma mater:
At Northwestern, I loved hopping into entrepreneurship class – working with professor David Schonthal, creating a reusable bag company, after Illinois implemented the plastic bag tax. My first intro into what is a good idea and what we had at the time, something we THOUGHT customers would like, but was just an annoyance for them. I think we were just ahead of our time. The terrace in Madison – it’s like heaven on earth.
